Incoming NYC Mayor Wants Crypto Taught in Schools

New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams said he would like blockchain technology and crypto to be taught in the city’s schools during a recent interview.

After coming out in favor of cryptocurrencies following his electoral victory last week, Adams said he had been stopped on the street by young people curious about bitcoin. Prompted by the host, he explained that bitcoin “is a new way of paying for goods and services throughout the entire globe.”

“And that is what we must do; open our schools to teach the technology and teach this new way of thinking when it comes down to goods and services,” Adams added.

When asked about criticism towards his approach to cryptocurrencies, Adam admitted to having lost a great deal of money as part of his pension during the financial crisis. “Volatility is part of some of the investments that we make,” Adams explained. Ultimately he said he wants “to make sure this city becomes a center for innovation, no matter what that innovation is.”

Earlier during the weekend, Adams said he wanted to explore ways that would allow New Yorkers to be paid directly in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Adams also reiterated a pledge he made last week to take his first three paychecks in bitcoin. The vow came after Miami Mayor Francis Suarez himself had said that he would take his next paycheck in bitcoin.

“This is a clear signal from me that I am not playing. We have become too afraid as a city we have become a culture of ‘no.’ We turn down everything,” Adams said. “This used to be a city where we led from the front.”

Adams explained that he would have to convert his dollar paycheck into bitcoin, as there’s currently no way for him to receive payment directly. However, he said he would like to “examine” ways to enable direct Bitcoin payments, “so New Yorkers have a choice of how they want to receive their paychecks.”
